Prison Leaver Support

A Different Path Forward

Leaving prison can be the beginning of a new chapter, but rebuilding life after custody is not always straightforward. Returning to education, finding employment, developing confidence and establishing a positive routine can all present challenges. For some individuals, previous experiences of education, additional learning needs or time away from employment can create further barriers.

At Different Path Education Support, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to move forward, develop their skills and build a future that works for them. We provide individualised, practical and non-judgemental educational support and mentoring for people preparing for or adjusting to life after custody.

Our approach focuses on recognising existing strengths, identifying realistic goals and developing the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to take positive steps towards education, training, employment and greater independence. Your past does not have to define your future.

Education and Essential Skills

Education can open opportunities and provide a foundation for greater independence. We can support individuals with:

  • Reading, writing and everyday literacy.
  • Numeracy and practical mathematics.
  • Functional Skills preparation.
  • Digital skills and everyday technology.
  • Returning to education after a break.
  • Developing study skills and learning confidence.
  • Exploring suitable education and qualification pathways.

Support is tailored to individual starting points, abilities, additional needs and personal goals.

Employment and Career Preparation

Returning to employment can feel overwhelming, particularly when someone has spent time away from the workplace. We provide practical support with:

  • Writing and updating CVs.
  • Completing job application forms.
  • Searching for suitable employment opportunities.
  • Preparing for interviews.
  • Discussing previous convictions and preparing appropriate disclosures.
  • Recognising transferable skills and existing experience.
  • Exploring training, apprenticeships and further education.
  • Developing workplace communication and confidence.

We aim to help individuals recognise what they can offer and prepare for realistic employment opportunities.

Mentoring, Confidence and Personal Development

Moving forward involves more than qualifications or finding a job. Different Path provides supportive, individualised mentoring focused on:

  • Building self-confidence and self-esteem.
  • Identifying strengths and personal achievements.
  • Setting realistic short-term and long-term goals.
  • Developing motivation and a sense of direction.
  • Building positive routines.
  • Developing communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Overcoming barriers to engagement.
  • Taking manageable steps towards greater independence.

Support is delivered without judgement, with an emphasis on consistency, encouragement and achievable progress.

Practical Life Skills and Independence

Everyday skills can make a significant difference when adjusting to life after custody. Depending on individual needs, we can provide educational and practical skills support with:

  • Time management and organisation.
  • Establishing daily and weekly routines.
  • Budgeting and everyday money skills.
  • Understanding and completing forms.
  • Using email and online services.
  • Preparing for appointments, training and employment.
  • Planning achievable goals.
  • Building independence and decision-making skills.

Our aim is to develop practical knowledge and confidence that can be applied to everyday life.

An Individual Approach

We recognise that no two people have the same experiences, needs or goals. Some individuals may wish to return to education or develop essential skills. Others may be ready to explore employment or require support rebuilding confidence before taking their next steps.

We take time to understand the individual, identify barriers and develop a realistic plan that reflects their strengths, circumstances and aspirations. Support can be adapted for individuals with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), neurodivergence, literacy difficulties or other additional learning needs.

Experience That Understands Different Starting Points

Different Path Education Support is founded by Amy Louise Herbert, an experienced education professional with a background in prison education, educational leadership, teaching and supporting individuals with additional learning needs.

This experience has developed an understanding of the barriers individuals may face when returning to learning, preparing for employment or navigating changes in their lives. We believe in recognising potential, building positive professional relationships and providing practical support without judgement.

Who Is This Support For?

Our services may be suitable for:

  • Adults who have recently left prison.
  • Individuals preparing for education, training or employment following custody.
